There's a fine line between criticism and talking to him in a downright condescending and rude manner. Obraxis isn't even a programmer on the PDT nor is he the lead. He is, however, a long time developer of NS2 and deserves at least a degree of respect. This kind of conversation contributes to nothing other than 'getting it out of your system'.

Hellrunner Basterds servers use a balance mod sitting between compmod and vanilla
It could be worth looking into as a replacement.
I hate to criticise Dragon here as he has put so much work into these mods, but the truth is, I think this is kind of childish approach to the problem. You could protest in some form, turn it off for a few days, ask the competitive community to sign a petition to UWE or something, but instead this is a rage quit, that really doesn't hurt UWE that much and does hurt the competitive community.
At least imo you could have licesnsed and left you work up on github to allow someone else, but you want to see it all burn :/

Please, for the sake of Lord Gaben, just communicate through whatever channels are necessary to make sure that whatever actions are needed to keep comp mod alive and well are taken. You have put a lot of work and time, and are emotionally invested in the outcome of your precious time, this is obvious; But what we really need is for competitive to GROW and to introduce new members into the fold.
It would be nice to put aside whatever difficulties there are and find a way to recover from this. It will be absolutely essential to the continued growth of the NS competitive community to streamline the communication between UWE and mod developers, however is necessary.
I think it is obvious that the community wants to continue to use our game sense and understanding of Natural Selection to continue to guide the development of the community in whatever way possible. We just want 6v6 comp to be fair, balanced, and work for the future. Nobody wants our favorite game to die.

Can ns2 please not die because of this shit i still enjoy it and overwatch isnt good i heard. :/
UWE please?
First, Thank you Dragon for all you have contributed. Not to mention over the past few months you've been much more involved in the comp scene, speccing gathers etc. which is what a true open door policy is. There have been times when a change happens and LUA errors and nothing can be done, yet someone ends up reaching out to you and within less than 30 minutes it is fixed. That in itself displays a character trait that is intangible.
@Obraxis, thank you for posting and replying, it appears you are the only person with a standing in UWE to take the time to post on these forums which has, for obvious reason, resulted in a machine gun firing of questions which have been unanswered or held in the mental queue for a few people. I think we can all respect you for showing up.
From what I've read and experienced, UWE's business model is the main cause of what we are experiencing. They have two major objectives as a company. 1) Make money 2) Lure in new players with shiny new things to satisfy #1.
They are not a grassroot group of people who enjoy making a game and continue improving upon an indie game for gamers. They are a group of people who are looking to make money, and who can fault them for that. I believe there is a large disconnect between the comp scene's expectations of NS2 and UWE's vision of NS2.
If you understand this as their business model then you will also understand the limited survivability of what is ahead for this scene/game. The pure fact that the objective is to increase the player base to a game that has one full time person focusing on the bugs displays the inevitable.
We've also been extremely fortunate to have Dragon and Mendasp, who are amazing human beings.

I wasn't going to reply, but my original post was more whiny than I wanted and didnt make everything as clear as I had hoped. Another part of the issue is how 'UWE' still continues the us versus them argument. There are not many people actively post and discussing issues from the comp scene, and the few that do are almost all labeled as trolls or 'elitists'. This isn't anything new, but with the dwindling numbers its getting worse and worse. UWE will now try to act like they do nothing wrong, but this has and always will continue behind the scenes. Its those kinds of comments last night that made me realize how retarded I have been to support this as long as I have. Ive been called and elitist asshole and the reason why NS2 sucks multiple times on OFFICIAL UWE chat programs like discord and slack, and they dont do shit about it. But if I responded overly harsh, i get in trouble... This attitude hasn't changed, they still regard the comp scene negatively and think only a few disagree with what changes they make. IF no one points out the problems with things on the forums, they will keep making changes with no regard.

^ Dragon - if you decided that things were not workable in the current state anymore, then I don't blame you for taking action. Your action demands the UWE change how they are doing things or they lose people like you which results in the comp scene being shattered. Obraxis posting here shows me that at least one of them is concerned about it. Hopefully they make it a lot easier to discuss important topics you were trying to bring up. They should do that, and they should also keep you in the conversation regarding any future changes as it could have an effect on all the work you have done - which ends up changing the comp scene for all of us. I'm out of the loop so I can only hope this all improves, even if just a little.

Dragon, just wanted to send some love. I only started playing again last spring because of compmod, and wouldn't consider playing the game how it is in vanilla.
I'll nickname a pokemon after you in my Red Version playthrough and send you a picture of how cute you look
Tried vanilla. I never want to go back there. The only reason this game is playable is because of ns+ and compmod.

Ns2 is run on a fucked up engine.
They are trying to fix it.
They dont really know what they are doing but they are working on it...
World of warcraft, with a massive team, had this problems with Addons, they kept breaking addons every fucking patch...
So, the thing is, i dont believe we can even expect that UWE will keep the Mods working becouse they cant even keep the game working...
Im not trying to defend them, but... come on...

Reading the comments here is hillarius. So many acting like little spoiled children trowing sand at each others eyes.
Start showing that you guys actually are adults and start being constructive instead of this childish bitching and whining. If you dont have anything nice to say just keep it to your self.
Communication is always imperfect.
It will lead to biased assumptions. Both parties will have their own view.
Past will not matter, if the parties want to reach the same outcome.
Finally its up to accepting the errors in communication, reaching out and communicating the future goals.
NS2 is excellent game. I love to follow competitive scene. Thank you Dragon for comp mod, Uwe for great game.
And fu all who plays the game and cries how bad it is. Just go and take a look what kind of games they make out there. NS is special, try to deny it and I will strangle you. ;)

Dragon did not take down his mods solely as a protest to UWE regarding the difficulty of mod upkeep (He maintains NS2 Classic which was completely broken with the last two forced extensions). He also took down his mods to encourage all competitive players to speak up. The competitive community (arguably the most passionate of NS2 players) have become complacent regarding the direction of NS2 development because we're sheltered by these mods that fix most of our problems. Spawning facing a random direction, riflejam, broken clog physics, steam friends coloring enemies on the map, terrible skulk wallwalking to list a few - these are all things that we don't have to deal with because they're fixed in MODs when they should be taken care of in the base game.
The point was to get the competitive community to SPEAK UP. We're part of the NS2 playerbase, and these issues don't only affect us, they affect the community at large.

Vanilla honestly isn't that bad (it's come a long way although they should have put function > form). Having nslmod and ns2+ is really just creature comforts. Obviously nsl mod makes tournament stuff easier but the game is still playable. Regardless, Mendasp and Dragon have valid points against UWE as does pretty much everyone who's ever played the game and cared about the game.
The game really should just die so MAYBE UWE might learn a lesson about fostering a community and actually allowing themselves to listen to feedback and not be so god damn arrogant, otherwise they will continue making millions thinking their shit doesn't stink.
Fun side note, I told a friend I'm going to go play that sudoku game they made because it was "the only thing UWE made that wasn't shit" and then i launched it and realized it doesn't scale at all, only full screen on a tiny resolution or windowed stuck at a tiny size. RIP the dream.
