Voice Communication Situation

NS2 is coming and we have several candidates for the voice communication standard of NS2. Ventrilo 2.1 doesn't work with Windows 7 properly and is not getting updated anymore. Sooner or later we have to switch.

Teamspeak 3

The newest Teamspeak is very easy to setup with the wizard which is even easier than in Mumble. Servers which are for non-commercial purposes can obtain free license to host unlimited clients. It has huge number of features, some of which are useful (such as per-client volume) and some which are not (3D sound). Only downside I can think of is the lack of comments, but you can send text messages to channels. Other thing is the huge number of features which clutter the menus a bit. This is my personal favourite for next generation voice communication software for NS2.

Mumble 1.2

Mumble 1.2 is the newest stable version. The voice, atleast in earlier release had occasional glitches and the password-system (token system) is unintuitive. Both TS3 and Mumble use the same CELT voice-codec which is very clear albeit adding a bit of metallic sound (barely noticeable in TS). Biggest drawback is probably the engineer type of user interface (mainly settings, other menus are good). Also some reported problems with NS losing sound but this was fixable. Mumble has in-game list of nicks which is useful in gather where you may not know whos talking.

Shockvoice

Shockvoice is yet another voice communication client which has many more-or-less useful plugins. Its rather easy to set up, but requires .NET which most computers have nowadays, but is a big drawback for those who don't.

Ventrilo 3

Well we all know Ventrilo, and its newest version. Great features but commercial. Hosting costs strawberries. Since we already have the network and CPU capacity to host voice communication server on our own hardware, its unlikely we're going to host any Ventrilo 3 servers. If NS2 would bring up new players, it'd be the admins and donators who would have to pay for any extra slots required (now it would be 50-100 euros per 6 months).

TS3 sounds good, mumble has been good apart from the slight voice glitches.

Mumble's ingame nicks might be damn useful once the scene gets bigger. Any idea if mumble being open source could have use for ENSL?

ever support ventrilo, cos there are free softwares which do same trick. My top choice would be Mumble (open source, uprising support and should have best latency + network use), but TS3 will be fine

Also Ventrilo has issues with Win7 (I use v2.1 without problems..) and it need more network to use than others.

Mumble has far better potential than any of the others imo, open source means we could do some awesome things aswell. ( ENSL version of mumble with special features suitable for NS2, site intergration etc ).

Ventrilo is capitalist shit, and I'm not a fan of teamspeak, although havn't given 3 a proper chance yet ( I realize it is a completely newly engineered program and isn't an update. )

Don't forget that programming for TS3 is far easier than doing so for Mumble. While TS3 is Plugin based you have to edit the source code for Mumble. And I doubt that people will install 2 versions one for ENSL and one for their friends Mumble Server.

You also can create an overlay plugin.

If TS3 has equal delay as mumble then I dont care what for use, but it really should be mumble. The big thing for mumble is that vent has a 1 second delay before you actually transmit even if you have 0 ping while mumble is much lower. or something. so therefore mumble is better

they worked on the delay and the Server is not Russian it is actually hosted in Germany Bendor the IP is: vent.team-russia.net the port is standard. Try it. You will like it.

The delay in TS3 is pretty LOW and the administration is easy too.
The biggest minus is that you have 99999999999999999999 functions which you will never use.
But Mumble is going the same way.

I like mumble, lots of great features once you've set it up.

TS3.. tried it, seems better than TS2 but I couldn't get it working, my voice wouldn't transmit and someone else there had a horrible output only on that client.

Shock' sounds ok, not tried it, does it have the in-game overlay? Lol, .net really isn't that hard to get, it's free from microsoft site..

Some people already have vent3 servers don't they?

License issue for Ventrilo is a killer imo. Tried Mumble i think, had fps issue with it on NS so i gave it up. I'm currently trying TS3 and it's working really fine. Voice recognition in TS2( i.e everyone sounding the same ) had always kept me away from TS. But now I don't see why we wouldn't use it.

mp , unless you change the mumble net code, any compiled version of the program with interface changes or more features would be able to connect to any other mumble server.

Yeah mu is right. Mumble is by far the fastest, although I havent tried TS3, but I doubt it could improve on the delay. Tried vent comparison against mumble at multiplay LAN. They hosted a series of vent servers but when we used them we noticed vent had like a 1 second delay (making calling shit), on switching to a hosted mumble the delay was like negligable.

Interestingly enough TS3 uses LUA scripting for its plugins. Having the same scripting language as NS2 doesn't hurt one bit at least. So far I'm undecided between Mumble and TS3. Both seem least to say decent.

Mumble or TS3 would be fine. The delay in TS3 has been greatly lowered compared to TS2. But mumble is still the fastest imo.
